This is a gorgeous little book about the life and times of Coco Chanel. Both modern and 20's flapper fashion owe a lot to the vision of Coco Chanel. Whether for a costume of a Halloween party or a special occasion, an authentic flapper outfit is composed of a dress made of a light material like chiffon, silk, satin or crepe. As well as doing a good job of pissing off the people who thought women should dress in a specific way. This is a very simplistic biography as is benefitting a children's picture book, but clearly this is for slightly older readers than the preschool through 2nd grade. Assuming that the message one is imparting to young girls is that hard work, not following the crowd and making your way your own way are the objectives and not promoting being cute and fashionable. Coco Chanel, Paul Poiret, and other visionary fashion designers had pivotal roles in defining the flapper style.

The 1980’s was an era full of vibrant, contrived, high-concept designs. Fashion in the 1990s rejected this idea and reverted back to simple, streamlined silhouettes. I enjoyed the story and the book cover with its perfume bottle and a smiling Coco kneeling on the floor. Perfect for reminding young readers to dream big and hold fast to their own visions, this picture book addresses fashion, a subject not often found in books for young readers. Part of the feminist movement, after all, involved freeing women from the constraints of restrictive clothing. But she introduced an entirely different concept of women’s fashion to the world. In the years before 1919, fitted vibrant colored clothing was the signature look, where black or dark clothing were only worn at funerals and at times of mourning. She even began attending many high social functions wearing pants, making something that was never done before a new trend in women’s fashion.3 Her style was one of a kind.
