As the Victorian era began, black transitioned from a color of art to one of grief and mourning – widows were expected to wear black for at least four years – and also for service livery, as the uniform for maids. I could tell too that the author is foreign and this is some sort of translation, as the transitions and how things are worded are often a little confusing or make less than perfect sense. Preschoolers will not understand this and will probably be bored by it. From Nicole Kidman to Kate Moss, the flapper look is almost as popular today as it was in the 1920s; influencing common fashion icons every day. Accessories like a pearl necklace, cloche (bell-shaped) hat, or any headband decorated with embroidery, beads, and feathers would admonish the 1920's flapper dresses of the day.

The book is geared to children as young as four years, and my daughter was able to appreciate and follow it. As a parent, it is always nice to learn something from reading, and I did with this book. The book begins in the orphanage where Coco learned to sew then follows her career and how she observed how the rich and famous acted, but Coco was always astonished as their fashion choices.
Vogue likened the dress to Henry Ford’s Model T automobile. It draped form the shoulders and bloused at the hips in the front. The front was accented by pin tucks that formed a V from center front up to the shoulders. The original was fashioned from a black crepe de chine fabric. Vogue would later comment on the design that is was a uniform of sorts for women.
